Powder of a substance obtained by calcination is called Bhasmam and sublimation is called Sindooram.

Bhasma preparation commences with medicinal purification which results in
elimination of harmful matter from the drug.
Modification of undesirable physical properties of the drugs.
Conversion of some of the characteristics of the drugs.
Enhancement of the therapeutic action, thereby potenzing the drug.

Purified drug is subjected to Bhasma process by triturating with prescribed liquids for the specified period of time, into a fine paste, which is made into small button like a mass, dried and calcined in closed crucibles in temperature adjusted furnaces / in pits with cow dung cake as fuel. The process is repeated according to the texts.

Basic Components:
Solid medium: Purified metals and minerals/ marine products/ animal products/ herbs.

Quality Control Criteria: Quantitative estimation of elements, ash value, acid insoluble ash, loss on drying at 110o C.

Organoleptic Features: The product should adher to finger prints, should float on water surface,should not revert to original state,should not have metallic lustre.colour varies with drugs used.No characteristic taste.
