“Asava”
and “Arishta” are medicinal preparations
which have self-generated weak alcohol. Aqueous and alcoholic
extracts of the ingredients are easily and quickly absorbed from
the gastric mucousa. The potency is preserved in alcoholic medium.
This mode of preparation is a result of fermentation process.
Basic
Components.
Aqueous Medium: Decoction (For ARISHTAM) Boiled and cooled water
(for ASAVAM)
Sugar Medium: Jaggery / Sugar / Sugar candy / Honey.
Solid medium: Powdered drugs to sprinkle.
Fermentation enhancer: Woodfordia fruiticosa (flower)

Control Criteria: Specific Gravity, Alcohol content, pH, reducing/non-reducing
sugars, total solids
Organoleptic
features: Generally clear amber coloured liquid having aromatic
alcoholic odour, and characteristic taste.
