2. Therapies

Panchakarma therapy

Panchakarma (Pentafold purificatory measures) play a vital role in Ayurvedic therapeutics and as such, they occupy an important place in Ayurvedic System of Medicine. The classical Ayurvediya panchakarma is the comprehensive method of internal purification of the body by Vamana, Virechana, Vasthi, Nasya & Rakthamoksha.

The importance of panchakarma in Ayurveda is testified by the fact that it is essentially applicable to all cases covering a wide range of preventive, curative and promotive conditions. The five therapies all end up with a little difference in implementation depending on the symptoms manifesting in the human body. The panchakarma therapy has a direct relevance to both, the healthy as well as ill persons.

Vamana (Induced emesis-specific therapy for Kaphaja disorders): Process by which vitiated humours are eliminated through oral route, for the purification of the upper half of the body

Virechana (Induced Purgation/Laxation-specific therapy for Paithika disorders):

Process by which vitiated humours are eliminated through anal route, for the purification of the lower half of the body.

Vasthi (Oleus and Unoleus enemata-specific therapy for Vathika disorders):

Purificatory measure which consists of suitable medicaments in the form of enemata through rectal, vaginal or urethral routes.

Nasya (Erhines/Snuffing-Specific therapy for diseases related with head):

Purificatory measure by which suitable medicaments are introduced through nasal passage either in liquid or in powder form.

Rakthamoksham (Blood letting-Specific therapy for diseases related with blood):

Purificatory measure in diseases related with impure blood by using external means like, instruments (Pracchanam) leeches (Jalookavacharanam), horns etc.

Special Keralite techniques

Dhara: Uninterrupted application of medicated oil (Thailadhara)/ buttermilk (Thakradhara)/milk (Ksheeradhara)/ fermented whey (Dhanyamladhara) on the head, throughout body or both.

Pizhichil: Pouring comfortably warm medicated oil liberally over the body followed by gentle massage.

Navarakkizhi: Massage done with small linen bags filled with medicated and cooked Navara rice, after a liberal application of medicated oils.

Thakradhara: Uninterrupted application of medicated butter milk on the head.

Thalapothichi: Procedure in which herbal medicines are made into paste and applied over the head in a special manner.

Navaratheppu: Application of medicated cooked navara rice on whole or affected parts of the body.

Thalam: Application of medicated pastes/oils over crown

Massage techniques

Udhwarthanam: Massage with medicinal powders specially meant for reducing body fat, improvement of complexion, functional improvement of vital organs.

Navaratheppu: Application of medicated cooked navara rice on whole or affected parts of the body.

Snehanam (oleation therapy-Internal as well as external done prior to Panchakarma therapy)

Snehanam: Intake of medicated unctuous dravya like Ghee, Oil etc. for a specific duration especially for chronic Diseases.

Abhyangam: Application of medicated oil all over body

Swedanam: (Sudation technique done prior to Pancha-karma therapy) Thirteen methods of thermal sudation like mixed fomentation, Hot bed sudation, Steam kettle sudation, Affusion sudation, Stone bed sudation, Trench sudation, Cabin sudation, Ground red sudation, Pitcher bed sudation, Pit sudation, under bed sudation are indicated in this method.

Upanaham: Wrapping specific areas for a specific time interval with medicated pastes intended to subside inflammation or paini.

Palppuka: Sudation technique with medicated milk

Kizhi: Fomentation technique by using boluses of herbal leaves (Elakkizhi) or medicated powers (Choornakkizhi) or warmed sand (Manalkkizhi) or roasted salt (Uppukizhi), according to the conditions or diseases.

Pichu: Applying oil soaked cloth over affected body parts intended to reduce local pain or stiffness.

Lepam: Applying medicated pastes on the body parts.

To maintain quality in medicine and avoid adulteration, Oushadhi is directly supplying medicines from factory to Panchakarma Hospital.
